You do not need to demonstrate financial need to obtain a federal student loan. Unsubsidized federal student loans are available even to wealthy students.

Federal student loan programs are designed for half-to-full-time students with demonstrated financial need as well as for those without need.

Loans available without regard to financial need include the unsubsidized Federal Direct Stafford Loan and the Federal Direct PLUS Loan.

However, all federal education loans require student to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), even when you are not counting on a need-based subsidy.

Subsidized Federal Direct Stafford Loans are available only to students who demonstrate financial need through the FAFSA process. Unsubsidized Stafford Loans, PLUS Loans, and private education loans may be sought regardless of financial need.
