Morningstar names best and worst 529 plans

Morningstar Inc. has released its 2008 list of best and worst 529 plans, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The five best 529 plans according to Morningstar are the Colorado Scholars Choice College Savings Program, the Illinois Bright Start College Savings Program, the Maryland College Investment Plan, Virginia CollegeAmerica plan, and the Virginia Education Savings Trust. Scholars Choice and CollegeAmerica are sold through brokers.

The five worst 529 plans according to Morningstar are the Mississippi Affordable College Savings Program, the Mississippi Affordable College Savings Adviser Program, the Nebraska AIM College Savings Plan, the New York 529 College Savings Program, and the Ohio Putnam CollegeAdvantage Plan. The Mississippi Adviser plan, Nebraska AIM plan, and Ohio Putnam plan are sold through brokers.
