CSF survey finds families with too much college debt, too little savings

A College Savings Foundation survey of 447 parents across geographic, age, and income brackets found that 54 percent had less than $5,000 saved toward college, and that 38 percent expected to be paying off college-related debt over more than 10 years.

Other findings in the survey:

- 79 percent would be highly disappointed if their child could not afford to go to college.
- 22 percent expect college costs to be the child's responsibility.
- 24 percent expect help from grandparents.
- 29 percent are investing for college in 529 plans.
