Celebrate College Savings Month!

September is widely recognized as College Savings Month, and with good reason! As kids ready their new clothes and pack their backpacks to head back to school, the topic of affording college tuition looms large for many parents. In an effort to promote college savings and 529 college savings plans, many states are holding events and hosting contests throughout the month of September. Many of the contests are offering significant prizes, which only sweetens the incentive to start thinking about saving for college if you haven't already! Check out our growing list below of College Savings Month events taking place all over the country. We have compiled the following list of state/plan promotions:

TIAA-CREF Dreams Start Small $100,000 College Fund Contest

  • Grandparents and parents can submit original photos of their children to be eligible to win $100,000 contributed to a TIAA-CREF-managed 529 college savings account.
  • The submitted photos must be of the children "dreaming big", and include a caption explaining how that child dreams big.
  • Winner will be selected based on creativity of the photo and persuasiveness of entry.

California: Scholarshare Share Your Spirit Promotion

  • Residents of the state of California can enter for a chance to win a $5,000 Scholarshare college savings account.
  • One grand prize winner will receive a $5,000 account, three other winners will each receive a $1,000 account.
  • In addition to submitting the entry form, entrants must like the ScholarShare 529 College Savings Plan on Facebook.

Connecticut: CHET $1,529 Giveaway

  • New or current CT account holders are eligible to win a $1,529 CHET college savings account.

Kansas: Learning Quest 529 Education Savings Program Annual Essay Contest

  • Open to 7th & 8th grade students in the state of Kansas.
  • Entrants must submit a 100-350 word essay answering the question "If you had $2,000 to invest in your interests, how would you spend the money to better prepare yourself for the future?"
  • One 1st place winner each from the 7th & 8th grades will receive $2,000 in a Learning Quest Account and a $1,000 contribution to their schools.
  • A People's Choice winner will also be chosen from each grade to receive a $1,000 Learning Quest account and a $1,000 contribution to their schools.

Idaho: IDeal's "Win $500 for College" Contest

  • Residents of Idaho can enter to win one of twelve $500 prizes
  • Each prize will be a $500 contribution into a new or existing IDeal College Savings account.

Indiana: CollegeChoice 529 Direct Savings Plan College Savings Month Giveaway

  • Residents of Indiana can submit an entry form to be eligible to win $2,500 towards a new or existing CollegeChoice Direct Savings Plan Account.
  • Two winners will be selected to each receive the $2,500 grand prize.

Iowa: College Savings Iowa $5,290 Fall Giveaway

  • Iowans can register for a chance to win a $5,290 College Savings Iowa account.
  • Open to residents of the state of Iowa. Prize will be in the form of a newly established College Savings Iowa 529 account.

Mississippi: 529 Day at the Mississippi Children's Museum

  • Saturday, September 7 from 10AM-2PM is 529 Day at the Mississippi Childrens Museum.
  • Museum admission will only be $5.29 in celebration.
  • College Savings Mississippi will be on hand to provide parents with information about the 529 plans and how to start saving.
  • Attendees can also sign up for the chance to win one of two $1,000 prizes in the form of MACS scholarships, which will be given away during the event.

Missouri: College Savings Month Drawing & Essay Contest

  • Missouri students in grades kindergarten through 8th grade can enter to win a $529 contribution to a new or existing MOST 529 Plan Account.
  • Students in kindergarden - 5th grade will draw a poster that shows what he or she wants to be as a grownup.
  • Students in 6th - 8th grade will submit an essay about how college will help to achieve his or her goals.

Nebraska Educational Savings Trust Draw Your Dreams Contest

  • Children who are Nebraska residents and in 1st - 5th grade can submit artwork for a chance to win a $2,000 contribution to a NEST 529 College Savings Plan account.
  • Submissions must be a 9"x12" landscape picture of what you dream of becoming when you grow up.
  • 12 winners will be chosen on October 18, 2013 to receive $2,000 into new or existing NEST 529 accounts.

Nebraska: NESTFest

  • Nebraska Educational Savings Trust is hosting a free family festival to celebrate Nebraska's college savings plans.
  • Three events will be held: one in Lincoln, one in Blair, and one in Wayne.
  • The festivals will feature free food and family-friendly activities including a magic show and petting zoo.
  • NEST representatives will be on hand to answer questions, and all new NEST customers will receive a $25 bonus to contribute to their new account.
  • Events take place on September 28, 2013 in Lincoln and Blair, and on October 6 in Wayne.

Oklahoma College Savings Plan 10,000 Reasons to Save Sweepstakes

  • Open to all residents of the State of Oklahoma who are 21 years of age or older and are the parent, legal guardian, or grandparent of a child age 18 or younger who is also an Oklahoma resident.
  • Both current Oklahoma College Savings account owners and non-account owners are eligible to enter
  • One winner will be randomly selected from all entries to receive a $10,529 contribution to a new or existing Oklahoma College Savings Plan account.
  • The school of the winning entrant's child/grandchild will also receive a $10,529 cash contribution.

Virginia529: Virginia529 Turning Dreams into Reality Contest

  • Current or past Virginia529 account holders can share how a Virginia529 account is helping or has helped someone turn their dreams into reality.
  • One submission will receive a $2,529 contribution to an inVEST account; two others will win $529 contributions.
