Celebrate College Savings Month!

September is widely recognized as College Savings Month, and with good reason! As kids ready their new clothes and pack their backpacks to head back to school, the topic of affording college tuition looms large for many parents. In an effort to promote college savings and 529 college savings plans, many states are holding events and hosting contests throughout the month of September. Many of the contests are offering significant prizes, which only sweetens the incentive to start thinking about saving for college if you haven't already!

Virginia529 College Savings Month Events

  • Trivia Contest starting September 15, with multiple $529 accounts given away
  • Weekly tips and articles on saving for college

California: ScholarShare "Share Your Spirit" Sweepstakes

  • California residents can enter to win money towards a new or existing ScholarShare College Savings Plan Account.
  • At the end of each week in September, one entry will be selected to receive $500.
  • One entry will be selected to win a $2,500 grand prize on September 26, 2014.

Connecticut: CHET College Savings Month events

  • Parents can register for a savings starter kit from CHET, containing a parenting tips book, enrollment kit, and football.
  • The first 1,529 people that sign up will receive the kit.
  • Individuals can participate in one of a series of online webinars taking place throughout the month of September.

Georgia: Path2College 529 Plan Newborn Sweepstakes

  • Enter for a chance to win $5,529 towards a Path2College (Georgia) 529 Plan
  • Open to residents - or Path2College 529 Plan account owners - who are the parent, guardian or grandparent of a child born in a Georgia hospital during 2014.
  • One winner will be selected to win $5,529, and will have the option to use all or a portion of the prize to open a Path2College Savings plan for the newborn.

Kansas: Learning Quest Make Your Mark Contest

  • Open to 7th & 8th grade students in the state of Kansas.
  • Entrants must submit a creative entry responding to the theme of "Your future is a clean slate where anything is possible".
  • Entries may be submitted as videos, images, or written essays.
  • One 1st place winner each from the 7th & 8th grades will receive $2,000 in a Learning Quest Account and a $1,000 contribution to their schools.
  • A People's Choice winner will also be chosen from each grade to receive a $1,000 Learning Quest account and a $1,000 contribution to their schools.

Kentucky Education Savings Plan Trust Newborn Giveaway

  • Open to parents, grandparents, or guardians of babies born in Kentucky during the prior 12 months.
  • One drawing will be held each calendar quarter, and the winner will receive a $1,000 KESPT college savings account. A total of four drawings will take place this year.

Iowa: College Savings Iowa $5,290 Fall Giveaway

  • Iowans can register for a chance to win a $5,290 College Savings Iowa account.
  • Open to residents of the state of Iowa. Prize will be in the form of a newly established College Savings Iowa 529 account.

Missouri: MOST College Savings Month Poster Contest

  • Missouri students in grades kindergarten through 5th grade can enter to win one of two $1,500 contributions to a new or existing MOST 529 Plan Account.
  • One student in kindergarten through 2nd grade and one student in 3rd through 5th grade will each receive one $1,500 grand prize.
  • Two "people's choice" winners (one in kindergarten - 2nd grade and one in 3rd - 5th grade) will be selected on Facebook to each receive a $529 MOST 529 plan contribution.

Nebraska Educational Savings Trust Draw Your Dreams Contest

  • Children who are Nebraska residents and in kindergarten - eighth grade can submit artwork for a chance to win a $1,000 contribution to a NEST 529 College Savings Plan account.
  • Submissions must be a 9"x12" landscape picture of what you dream of becoming when you grow up.
  • 12 winners will be chosen on October 18, 2014 to receive $1,000 into new or existing NEST 529 accounts.

Ohio: CollegeAdvantage College Savings Month Giveaway

  • Enter to win one of 20 awards in the form of a $529 contribution to a CollegeAdvantage Direct 529 Savings Plan account.
  • Winners will be selected on October 3, 2014, and announced on CollegeAdvantage's Facebook page.

Oklahoma College Savings Plan Newborn Sweepstakes

  • Enter for a chance to win $5,529 towards an Oklahoma College Savings Plan.
  • Eligible participants include Oklahoma residents who have a child or grandchild born in 2014 at a participating Oklahoma hospital.
  • One entrant will win the grand prize on behalf of his or her newborn child or grandchild, and one prize of $1,529 will be awarded to the volunteer auxiliary at the Oklahoma hospital of the winning newborn.

Oklahoma College Savings Plan 10,000 Reasons to Save Sweepstakes

  • Open to all residents of the State of Oklahoma who are 21 years of age or older and are the parent, legal guardian, or grandparent of a child age 18 or younger who is also an Oklahoma resident.
  • Both current Oklahoma College Savings account owners and non-account owners are eligible to enter
  • One winner will be randomly selected from all entries to receive a $10,529 contribution to a new or existing Oklahoma College Savings Plan account.
  • The school of the winning entrant's child/grandchild will also receive a $10,529 cash contribution.

  • TNStars is awarding $10,580 in contributions to TNStars College Savings accounts to celebrate College Savings Month.
  • Students in kindergarten - second grade can enter a coloring contest by submitting a colored PDF.
  • Students in third grade - eighth grade can enter the Financial Scholars Challenge.
  • One entry to the Coloring conest and one entry to the Financial Scholars Challenge will be selected to each receive a $5,290 TNStars College Savings account.

Utah: Utah Educational Savings Plan and Zions First National Bank "Make Your Mark" bookmark contest

  • Utah students in grades kindergarten through 12th can enter to win one of eight $1,000 UESP college savings scholarship accounts.

  • Winners from different age brackets will be selected: Two from kindergarten through 3rd grade, two from 4th grade through 6th grade, two from 7th and 8th grade, and two from 9th through 12th grade.
