December 17, National Maple Syrup Day, is a day of special significance to Savingforcollege.com. After he retired, our founder, Joe Hurley, started producing maple syrup and honey on his farm, Kettle Ridge Farm.

So, how else is maple syrup related to paying for college?

The New York State Maple Foundation, Inc. sponsors an annual scholarship in memory of Terry Laubisch, one of the founding members of the foundation. Applicants to the Terry Laubisch Maple Scholarship should demonstrate involvement in the maple syrup industry.

The Phelps Maple Syrup Fest sponsors a scholarship for local students from the school districts of Phelps, Iron River, Watersmeet, Northland Pines and Three Lakes in Wisconsin. More information can be obtained from the Phelps Chamber of Commerce at 715-545-3800.

The Vermont Maple Festival awards scholarships to the students selected as the Maple King and Maple Queen. These Vermont Maple Ambassadors each receive a $2,000 scholarship. Candidates should have experience with maple sugaring.

The Maple Flooring Manufacturers Association, Inc. (MFMA) sponsors a scholarship for fields related to the sports flooring industry.

In addition to these scholarships, some scholarship programs host pancake breakfasts to raise money for scholarships.
