September may be back to school for many families, but did you know it’s also College Savings Month? If you haven’t started saving for college yet, this is a great time to start and make a game plan. Arizona – AZ529
The AZ529, Arizona’s Education Savings Plan, is hosting the 3rd Annual AZ529 Essay Writing Contest.
Now through October 2nd, AZ529 is accepting essays from all Arizona 5th grade students.
They’re asking them: What is your dream job and how do you plan on achieving it in the future?
A total of 20 winners—one from each Arizona county and at least one student from a district, charter, homeschool, private and tribal school– will be selected to win $529 towards a new or existing AZ529 Plan account. Winners will also be recognized by Treasurer Yee during a ceremony at the Arizona State Capitol.

Iowa – College Savings Iowa
College Savings Iowa is celebrating College Savings Month throughout September by sponsoring a giveaway where one family in Iowa will win a $10,000 College Savings Iowa account contribution. Visit Iowa529Contest.com to register and read the Official Rules. All residents of Iowa with a child or grandchild under 18 years old are eligible.
Additionally, the Plan is proud to partner with two children’s museums across the state, the LaunchPAD in Sioux City and the Iowa Children’s Museum in Coralville, to spread awareness of Iowa’s direct-sold 529 plan. Fun promotional items and a chance to register for the giveaway will be available for attendees. Pennsylvania – PA 529 College and Career Savings Program
The PA 529 College and Career Savings Program is hosting a webinar for families looking to learn about the financial aid process. This webinar will be moderated by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) and will cover many aspects of financial aid. While anyone may attend, this webinar may be of specific interest to parents of high school students.
- Financial Aid Overview with PHEAA – Tuesday, September 20, 2022 – Noon to 1 p.m. (EST)
Join PHEAA to gain an understanding of the types and sources of aid available to help cover the cost of attendance at postsecondary schools. Participants will learn how to apply for financial aid, including the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®), which is required to determine eligibility for most financial aid programs. You’ll also hear about the available PHEAA resources for supporting students and families through this process.
Tennessee – TNStars College Savings 529 Program
Celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the launch of TNStars by giving away 10- $1,000 scholarships to 10 lucky Tennessee children.

Utah – my529 and the Utah System of Higher Education
During September’s National College Savings Month, my529 and the Utah System of Higher Education sponsor the Make Your Mark bookmark contest. The contest lets Utah students exhibit their talents by creating an original bookmark design for a chance to win a college savings scholarship. Eight Utah students in kindergarten through grade 12 will each receive a $1,000 college savings scholarship for their winning bookmark designs. Entrants must live in Utah. Ownership of a my529 account is not required. Submit an original bookmark design on the official entry form found here. Program open September 1 through October 3, 2022.
West Virginia – SMART529
In celebration of college savings month and the 20th anniversary of SMART529, the Board of Trustees is offering $20,000 SMART529 scholarships to three lucky West Virginia children ages 14 and under. Scholarship winners will be selected the first week of October, the first week of November, and the first week of December. Complete details regarding the sweepstakes can be found at www.wvtreasury.com/20years. SMART529 staff will be distributing information at West Virginia University’s “Family Day” football game on September 17th.
West Virginia State Treasurer Riley Moore is also announcing the grand prize winner of the When I Grow Up essay contest at an awards ceremony which will be shared on Facebook Live on September 16th. In addition to money invested in their college savings accounts, contest winners will win $500 cash prizes for their respective schools.
Additionally, the West Virginia State Treasurer’s Office will be sharing college savings information on Facebook and Twitter. Families with a child under one can sign up for the Bright Babies incentive to receive $100 in their account.
Washington – WA529
Washington College Savings Plans (WA529) created a fun back to school activity to help kids pass the time on rainy fall weekends and get them thinking about their future education. They developed a search challenge that doubles as a coloring page. This Washington-state shaped sheet is packed full of fun images of state landmarks, college mascots, and our WA529 mascot, Hootie the Owl.
