Description: The Harry S. Truman Scholarship seeks out current undergraduate juniors who show the same dedication to public service as the program's namesake. Nominated students should have distinguished themselves on campus through leadership, service, or academics and have firm plans for graduate study. The Truman Scholarship provides up to $30,000 in funding to students pursuing graduate degrees in public service fields. Once selected, Truman Scholars are offered the chance to participate in various programs that help with areas such as internship placement, career counseling, and graduate school admissions. After applications are submitted, a committee selects 200 finalists to be interviewed. These finalists are chosen based on their leadership record, the extent and quality of their community service experiences, academic performance, and suitability of their program of study for a career in public service. The finalists chosen are interviewed by selection panels who select one scholar from each state as well as Puerto Rico and other select Islands on the basis of leadership potential and communication skills, as well as the likelihood of “making a difference” in public service.

What's Required for the Application: The application process is fairly extensive, as this scholarship is competitive. Students must be nominated by a representative at their undergraduate institution. You can find the faculty representative from your institution here. Students should be in the upper quartile of their class and have records of public and community service. Students must submit the Truman Application, which consists of the institutional nomination form and letter, three additional letters of recommendation, a recent transcript, a 14-question application, and a public policy proposal. For the proposal, students should choose a controversial problem or issue in the field they hope to enter, and make recommendations for a solution to the problem.

What Makes it Unique: Although this is a very competitive scholarship, with 75 to 80 students chosen from approximately 600 applications, it does offer a large amount of money, and more importantly the opportunity to take part in several very beneficial programs. These programs, such as a leadership week, a 10-week long Summer Institute that features internships, seminars, and workshops, and a Public Service Law Conference, all help to pave the way for these very determined scholars to achieve their career goals in government and public service.
