Description: The National Peace Essay Contest will award 53 scholarships to eligible high school students in grades nine through twelve who can express themselves through a thoughtful and researched essay on a specific topic. The first place contest winner from each state will receive $1,000 and compete for national awards of $10,000, $5,000, and $2,500 for first, second, and third place respectively. Students are notified in May of their essays’ status and all first-place state winners are invited to attend a unique five-day all-expenses-paid awards program in Washington, D.C. in June .

What's Required for the Application: To apply for this scholarship, students must work with a contest coordinator of his choice. The coordinator can be any adult—teacher, parent, youth leader, etc. The coordinator is the key contact between students and the United States Institute of Peace. The student and coordinator must both fill out and submit applications that can be found here. The students will be asked to write a 1,500 word essay on this year’s topic: The Impact of New Media on Peacebuilding and Conflict Management.

What Makes it Unique: This is a unique scholarship because it promotes serious discussion among high school students, teachers, and national leaders about international peace and conflict resolution today and in the future.
