Description: The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships are to encourage students to pursue careers in engineering, the natural sciences, or mathematics. Each college may nominate four sophomore or juniors majoring in fields such as chemistry, biology, physics, computer science, and geology. Approximately 300 students will receive awards of up to $7,500 annually to cover expenses such as tuition, fees, books, and room and board. Junior-level recipients are eligible for two years of scholarship support; Senior-level recipients are eligible for one year of support. Applicants must be in the top 25% of their class, have at least a B average, and plan to continue with graduate study. Nominees are evaluated on demonstrated commitment to a career in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering.

What's Required for the Application: Students applying for this scholarship must be nominated by an appointed faculty member of the college or university they are attending. The president of each participating college appoints a Goldwater faculty representative to serve as the liaison between the institution and the Goldwater Foundation. You can find the representative from your college here. Nomination materials must be submitted to the foundation by January 31. These materials include an Institution Nomination Form, a Nominee Information form that provides a statement that describes the nominee's intent to enter an appropriate career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering, an essay written by the nominee that relates to the student’s chosen career path, three letters of recommendation, and the student’s college transcripts.

What Makes it Unique: This program seeks to alleviate a critical current and future shortage of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers in the United States. By offering a significant amount of scholarship money, the program encourages students who already have shown a clear commitment to professions in these fields to continue their education.
