Description: This scholarship is an essay-writing contest available to 11th and 12th graders. The essay must be written about Ayn Rand’s well-known novel The Fountainhead. A total of 235 awards are given out, ranging from 175 semifinalist prizes of $50 each to a first place $10,000 award.
What's Required for the Application: Students submitting an essay for this contest must choose from three topics on which to write about Rand’s novel. These topics can be found here. The essay must be between 800 and 1,600 words, and may be submitted by mail or online. Essays will be judged on organization and content, with an emphasis placed the student’s demonstration of deep understanding of the book and the question he or she is answering.
What Makes it Unique: This scholarship is different than some because it is solely an essay contest, and usual qualifying criteria such as GPA and extracurricular activities do not play a role in selecting the winners. The Fountainhead is a book commonly taught in many 11th and 12th grade class rooms, so many students may already be familiar with it. Because this contest is not as extensive as some, any student who has an interest in literature and/or writing is encouraged to submit an essay. The Ayn Rand Institute sponsors similar contests for 8th, 9th and 10th graders, based on Ayn Rand's novelette Anthem, and for 12th grade through college students, based on her novel Atlas Shrugged.
