Description: This scholarship is available to students whose lives have been impacted by cancer. In order to be eligible for this award, you must be either a cancer survivor or patient, or you must have parents or guardians diagnosed with cancer while you were between the ages of 15 and 35. Applicants must also be either attending or accepted to a four year college and seeking a bachelor’s degree or higher. Students best meeting the criteria for this scholarship will be awarded $2,500.
What's Required for the Application: Applicants for this award must complete and submit an application, which can be found here. The application requires students to demonstrate financial need, medical hardship, dedication to community service, commitment to educational and professional goals, and how they have used their cancer experience to impact the lives of others dealing with cancer. In addition to the common application, applicants for this scholarship must provide a physician verification form, a reference letter from a non-family member, a signed commitment to 50 hours of community service, and a financial need form. These forms are available on the scholarship’s website.
What Makes it Unique: This scholarship is unique because it offers students affected by the hardship of cancer the opportunity to demonstrate how this experience has shaped their lives. Though financial need and academics also play roles in the criteria for this award, the Vera Yip Memorial Fund specifically targets those who have had to face the battle of cancer and are moving forward with their lives. This award is available not only to cancer patients or survivors, but also to those whose parents have dealt with a cancer diagnosis, which can be just as life-changing.
