William Randolph Hearst Foundation U.S. Senate Youth Program
Sponsored by: William Randolph Hearst Foundation
Available to: About 100 high school juniors or seniors
Deadline: Fall of each year, application information available in late July/early August
Website: http://www.ussenateyouth.org/
Contact Email: USSYP@hearstfdn.org
Description: Approximately 100 student leaders, two from each state and from the District of Columbia, are selected as delegates for an all-expense-paid educational week in Washington, D.C. Students are immersed in Washington activities throughout their stay. Delegates tour national monuments and will hear major policy addresses by senators, cabinet members and other government officials. Students are also awarded a $5,000 scholarship. Students are nominated by their high school principals (one student per high school). Nominees must be currently serving in an elected capacity in student government or be a representative to a district, regional or state-level civic or education organization.
What's Required for the Application: Along with a completed application form, students must submit a transcript and standardized test data, an essay on a current issue in the U.S. Congress, a list of leadership activities, and a letter of recommendation from the high school principal.
What Makes it Unique: This program is interesting because not only does it award a significant amount of scholarship money to a student attending an accredited college, but it also provides an all-expense-paid trip so that students who are on the path to futures in the United States government can see the actual activities that go on in places such as the Senate and the House of Representatives. Though it is somewhat selective in the fact that only two student representatives from each state are chosen, this program does give those students who have a clear vision of where they want to go with their lives a chance to take the next step.
