Corrections
Aug. 14, 2009 -- The article Coverdell fade-out! What should you do? stated incorrectly that tax-free withdrawals of interest, dividends and capital gains to fund college expenses no longer will be permitted after the end of this year. That statement applies to K-12 expenses only. The tax treatment for college-related expenses has not changed.
May 9, 2011 -- The article Best 529 plan strategy? Use other people's money in tip #2 stated that grandparent-owned 529 plans do not affect student aid eligibility. This is incorrect. While they aren't reported as an asset on the FAFSA, any distributions from a 529 plan that isn't reported as an asset on the FAFSA are treated as untaxed income to the beneficiary on the subsequent year's FAFSA.
