Now that you’re following the top 20 people on Twitter that can help you save for college, it’s time to start thinking about which plans you might want to invest with. 529 college savings plans are currently available through 48 U.S. States. What you may not realize is that in most cases, any U.S. citizen is eligible to invest in any state’s plan regardless of where they reside.

What’s more, those who use 529 plans are allowed to roll their funds over to a different fund (once in a 12-month period) if they choose. To help you keep up-to-date with the latest college savings news, here are the 10 most active plans on Twitter, ranked by number of followers:

  • California @Scholarshare529
    In addition to providing college savings news and advice to followers, California’s ScholarShare 529 plan hosts educational webinars in English and Spanish. They’ve also done a great job at keeping up with mobile technology by offering a free Saving4College smartphone app and providing users with mobile access to their accounts.
  • Massachusetts @MEFAtweets
    The Massachusetts Educational Funding Authority (MEFA) regularly tweets about education news, tips for families and their U.Fund® 529 plan. Those who have been accepted into college can attend and in-person seminar or webinar to receive information on things like financial aid.
  • Virginia @Virginia529
    As the largest 529 plan in the nation, Virginia’s college savings programs boast “plan options for everyone”. The inVEST plan even offers a socially targeted investment portfolio.
  • Ohio @Ohio529plan
    Ohio’s College Advantage savings plans are taking full advantage of the Twitter scene with just under 900 followers. The Ohio Tuition Trust Authority also regularly provides articles and news on their blog.
  • Oregon @OregonCSP
    Oregon’s college savings plan is active on both Twitter and Facebook, posting updates and pictures on local events and college planning news. The plan encourages residents to save by offering a financial literacy program for children attending Oregon public elementary schools.

    In addition to receiving state income tax benefits, residents are eligible to enter a $25,000 sweepstakes running through August 2014.
