There's no denying it, college is expensive. One of the best ways to face those scary costs is to start saving early with a 529 college savings program. Promoting college savings is so important, in fact, that many states have designated the whole month of September as College Savings Month, and termed May 29th of every year "529 Day" in order to raise awareness about saving for college and using 529 plans to do so. Because of all the hype, September and May is a great time to think about opening a 529 plan, and even to earn some extra money for your new account. Many 529 plans host educational events and sponsor sweepstakes with large 529 plan contributions as prizes during these times.

Did you miss your opportunity during September or May? You still have a chance to take advantage of these promotions! Many 529 programs are now hosting special events and contests throughout the year.
