Georgia 529 to terminate partnership with Tennessee

A deal under which Tennessee residents enjoy special status as participants in Georgia's Path2College 529 savings plan will end on June 30, 2011. Georgia officials recently notified the Tennessee Treasurer of their decision to terminate their "partnership."

When Tennessee terminated its own 529 savings plan in 2008, participants in the plan were invited to roll over their accounts to Georgia's 529. A $50 matching contribution for Tennessee residents was to become available starting January 1, 2011.

The matching contribution program has been put on ice and Tennessee Treasurer David Lillard Jr. has indicated his intention to launch a new 529 savings plan in the future.
